3M prepares miniature projector for CES

ST. PAUL, Minn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–3M is now providing consumer electronics manufacturers with a revolutionary advancement in the emerging field of miniature projection technology. 3M scientists developed a breakthrough ultra-compact, LED-illuminated projection engine designed for integration into virtually any personal electronic device. Roughly the size of a wireless earpiece and less than half an inch thick, the 3M mobile projection engine delivers brilliant VGA resolution images and is available today.

When deployed in a host platform, such as a mobile phone, 3M’s technology can project a 40-inch or larger image with no-speckle and a high-fill factor that ensures superior image quality. Each engine uses an advanced liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) electronic imager in conjunction with proprietary 3M optics technology.

Imagine carrying a full size (40”) tv inside your cell phone? Thats where we are headed in the future, according to 3M.

I want one. I want twelve! I want, I want, I WANT!!!! Now, how do we power the darned thing? When will they solve the battery problem????
This is a SYSTEM BREAK. This technology will revolutionize our lives, mostly in ways we will not like at all and it will do so in other ways we cannot yet imagine. Think of how invasive it will be when while a teacher is up in front of the class, seven kids each project some competing or sarcastic or embarrassing videos on walls and ceilings! Or how projectors will be ubiquitous, you walking down any hallway, in a subway, in an office building, on the street, in a mall — and continual sales messages are projected all around you. Some may be xrated and be problematic for viewing by little children. Sound field projection will be allied to it and the cacophony will be deafening. There will be no private space left at all.

Years ago, on a camping trip with my young children, we pulled in late one afternoon to a state park and set up at a campsite in the woods. We set up our tent and other supplies, and began to cook our dinner and enjoy the beauty and quiet and wildlife in the magnificent woods. Winds whistling thru pines, the sounds of a brook rustling past our site. Heavenly. Then a car pulled into the adjacent campsite and set up a small tent and a big TV set which they tuned in to a sitcom and blasted its noisy laughtrack for all and sundry. They drowned out the sights and sounds we’d come there to appreciate. And that was 20 years ago. We all ain’t seen (or heard) nothin’ yet!

    Disruptive technology; discontinuous change..

    How is it disruptive?

    That is really cool!
But, It is also very alarming to the fact of no more peace and quiet for all of us who need it when we want it.
The world is turning into an over populated billboard, With every one fighting to be heard above the roar.
Now what would be really cool is when someone invents a sound nullifier which gives any device a limited radius to be heard from.
Outside of radius- Peace and quiet! (Ahhh!)
