Nikon Coolpix P80 is barely a point and shoot

In an apparent jab to anyone who bought an entry level digital SLR, Nikon has dropped the Coolpix P80, a 10 megapixel superzoom. Incorporating some of their best technologies, like VR (vibration reduction) in its enormous 18x optical zoom, and ISO up to 6400. How well that handles noise is yet to be seen, but the new EXPEED image processor may help.

Other features include a (very large) 2.7″ LCD, Digital SLR controls (Program, Aperture, Shutter and Manual), 13FPS (!) sports mode with up to 30 pictures in burst, Face Priority and a whole lot more.

Did I mention its got a $399.95 MSRP? This looks to steal a lot of the action away from entry level Digital SLRs and might just be enough to sway some advanced amateurs away too.

Griffin Clearboost improves signal, decreases cool

Have you ever thought to yourself - gee, how can I make my iPhone look even more nerdy? Well, you’re in luck. Griffin is killing two birds with one stone with their Clearboost iPhone case, which allegedly improves cell signal while only making you look a little lot dorky.

iLounge spent a week with the little trinket and gave it a respectible B+ rating, citing, “Over the course of five days of testing, we used a ClearBoost-covered iPhone indoors and outdoors alongside one or two iPhones without a ClearBoost case, trying various locations that were known to have great, good, or poor reception. We found that the antenna boosting performance displayed some fairly consistent characteristics: it is almost always a net positive, but it will not be a panacea for those suffering from complete service outages, and under some circumstances, it will do nothing.”

3G iPhone set for June release

Nobody outside of Apple’s core group of bigwigs and monocle-wearing Monopoly men knows exactly when the 3G iPhone will be released, but Goldman Sachs analyst David Bailey has already been 1 for 1 with his surprisingly accurate prediction that the current generation iPhone will receive a simple size bump in Feburary. The relevance here is that with a strong track record, there may be significant weight to his claim that a new iPhone in the second half of 2008 “[will] have a similar form factor as the current version although it could have a different look and will probably include 3G capability.” That sounds fairly vauge, but he was the first to accuratly predict the update and comes from a reputable ilk, so perhaps there is some basing to his statement.

The June date is simply placed due to its proximity to Apple’s WWDC convention, where they unveiled the shipping date for the original iPhone. Many other sources are claiming a June date, so it is shaping up to be both a fairly reasonable estimate and a very likely outcome.

To summarize, you have about two months to sell your old iPhone on eBay before the 3G version comes rumbling along to kill your resale value.

HP UMPC 2133 Specs, Pictures, Price and Release Date released

The skinny is this - the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC comes in four flavors, running between $549 and $849.

Sporting an 8.9″ WXGA LCD, the UMPC 2133 is based on a Via Chrome 9 platform with VIA C7-M processors. Except for the $749 version, all the processors run at 1.2ghz. The full spec sheet is attached below.

The UMPC 2133 is set to land in stores around April 7th, so if these have caught your eye and the heavy weight is not enough to turn you off, it won’t belong before you can pick one of these little laptops up.

Editor’s Note - the weight and dimensions listed appear to be shipping weights and box sizes, not for the physical unit.

Toshiba ApriPoko Robot controls TV, can’t love.

According to a questionable Japanese translation, the Toshiba ApriPoko robot responds to the things you do in your daily lifestyle and “learns,” through the processing and cataloging of infrared signals and voice commands, how to complete tasks on voice command.

The short version there is that once it learns your existing remote’s signal patterns, it acts as a voice activated universal remote with a slightly less daunting learning curve then the Logitech Harmony that you still haven’t opened.

Toshiba refused to comment on whether the diminutive robot possesses the ability to kill, so we’re going to err on the side of caution.
